Getting to Vienna: Useful Tips

Arriving by Plane
Vienna International Airport is only 25 minutes from the city center and easily accessible by public transport. The S-Bahn train (line S7) connects the airport to major transport hubs, offering transfer options to various metro lines. Additionally, direct bus connections are available to some parts of the city. To reach Vienna Main Station, ÖBB Railjet trains are the preferred option. Alternatively, a taxi ride typically costs between 30 to 50 euros.
Tip: Also check flights options to Bratislava, as Bratislava Airport is located nearby.
Arriving by Train
The city’s two most important train stations, Vienna Main Station and Vienna West Station, are well connected to the national and international rail network. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) runs its Railjet high-speed trains between Vienna and major European cities like Munich, Zurich, Budapest, and Prague several times a day. ÖBB night trains offer a comfortable option for more distant destinations in about 15 countries. Timetables and tickets are available at www.oebb.at.
Tip: Book early to take advantage of the particularly low rates offered by ÖBB Sparschiene.
Arriving by Bus
Long-distance buses can be a cost-effective alternative, with various bus companies offering connections from numerous European cities to Vienna. Flixbus is particularly known for its extensive route network across the European continent. Most buses arrive at the Vienna International Bus Terminal (VIB) in Erdberg, which is easily accessible by public transport through the U3 metro line.
Tip: Always compare prices with train connections, as ticket costs can vary.
Arriving by Car
If you prefer to travel by car, please be aware that parking in Vienna is restricted. The entire city is designated as a paid short-term parking zone, allowing a maximum parking time of 2 hours. Parking tickets are available at tobacco shops, post offices, ticket machines at metro stations, and various other locations. Parking for more than 2 hours is only permitted in parking garages. You can find an overview of all parking garages and their prices on Parkopedia.
Tip: It is best to park your car outside the city and use public transport to get around.
